About AQS: Staff Biographies

Michael Buckingham, Cover & Advertising Designer Michael Buckingham, Cover & Advertising Designer

Michael has been with AQS since November of 1997. One of the things he likes best about being here is the variety of work he does. You see his designs on the cover of every one of our books. All of our magazine ads are Michael’s work. He’s an Adobe Photoshop expert and is often called on to polish book photos. He puts together the awards ceremony slide shows of winning quilts at our three shows. He also does CD production work, making the masters for the pattern CDs we’re including in our books more and more often. You may have met him on a visit to the AQS booth at our quilt shows.

Michael is the author and designer of our Presidential Redwork collection (and yes, a President Obama redwork portrait is available) and appeared on Simply Quilts with Alex Anderson.

Michael’s wife, Paulette, was in the army for 20 of their 32 married years. They moved every three years—a practice that took them all over the United States and overseas for a hitch in the Netherlands where their first son, Collin, was born. (Their second son, Jacob, is a native-born Virginian.) While in Hawaii, Michael designed fabrics for a garment company there—all hand drawn and hand cut designs for silk-screen printing. “I got really good at drawing flowers and palm trees!” He and his family return to another former home state, Colorado, every year on a mission with their church.

If Michael quilted, he’d be a third-generation quilter. There are quilters on both his and his wife’s side of the family—both mothers and grandmothers. “Our house is full of quilts . . . practical ones.” He likes the traditional simplicity of block quilts but also appreciates art quilts. “Maybe when I retire, I’ll take up quilting.” But until he does, we’re glad to have his creative talents right here at AQS.
