About AQS: Staff Biographies
Charles R. Lynch, Photographer
When you read our books, browse through our American Quilter magazine, or surf our Website, have you ever wondered who’s behind the camera on all our quilts? It’s our own studio photographer, Charley.
After an on-air career in radio broadcasting, he became one of the original AQS employees in 1984, fulfilling a number of different functions before becoming our sole photographer. He says that a good mentor, an aptitude for photography, and the chance to hone his skills eight hours a day, five days a week since 1993 have made him the professional he is today.
Charley photographs quilts for our books and magazine, the winning quilts from our four shows, the fashion show winners, functions at The National Quilt Museum, how-to demonstrations, author and staff head shots (including the one of himself), workshops and classes, and our show merchandise (for sale on our Website). In addition, he does the photography for the Collector Books side of Schroeder Publishing, shooting collections as varied as Depression glass, Barbie® dolls, Star Wars® memorabilia, duck calls, and jewelry made of human hair!
The technical side of the work has changed over the years, from film transparencies to digital photography, which allows for more natural light and pictures more clearly showing piecing and quilting detail. Charley enjoys the tangible results of his work and the fact that “I’m exposed to some of the best quilts in the world.”
We think his photographs are the best, too. Thanks, Charley!
