Terry White
Terry has designed hand-embroidered items since she was in grade school. The study of historical and world embroidery has been one of her passions since she was allowed to go to the library by herself in the 7th grade. To say that she is self-taught would be a mistake. Her contemporary embroidery designs have been inspired by Constance Howard’s embroidery books, textile artists Gloria Vanderbilt (fiber collages), Ed Rossbach (structural textile work), Kaffe Fassett (needlepoint and color), and many others from the 1970s.
When Terry learned to quilt in 1978, she embellished her work with the hand needlework she knew. When her hands stopped working for her, she turned to the sewing machine. In 1996, she learned free-machine embroidery. Since then she has dedicated her time to developing techniques and designs that are as beautiful and texturally interesting as work done by hand. Terry loves to teach her techniques to students across the country. She especially likes to help women see the potential for developing their own style with this very easy form of needlework.
