    Cheryl Barnes has taken over 200 patterns from all seven of Shirley Thompson's quilting patterns books and created updated computer generated versions of these patterns, accurately resizing them to fit into the most common sizes of blocks and borders. Many of the patterns are continuous line, and several are a combination of two different sewing lines, creating interest and variety. In addition, Cheryl has updated Shirley's instructions for planning, auditioning and resizing patterns and includes a no-marking method as well as marking tips for those who would prefer to mark quilting patterns on their quilts. Tips on needles and threads, backings, battings and free motion and hand quilting are given, and advice on making labels will help you finish your quilt. Designed for hand, domestic and longarm quilters, this wide variety of patterns can be used by all quilters, from beginners to experts. Cheryl Barns is a professional long-arm quilter and in this book she has collected together over 200 patterns selected from Shirley's published designs. The patterns have been digitised so that they are symmetrical and resized to fit the most commonly used block and border sizes. Some of the designs are single and others double lined: 'Stitching Diagrams' accompany some of the patterns, indicating the starting point and stitching path. The patterns range from hearts and flowers to feathers and Celtic-inspired designs. Helpful tips and techniques for choosing and resizing patterns, marking and stitching are also given in this useful resource. -- Popular Patchwork, Summer 2005
