    Description

Collectors of quilting patterns are as intense as fabricaholics - they can never have enough! Here are three dozen traditional pieced blocks with full-sized worksheets that help identify the areas that need quilting. Multiply this by your choice of four different filler categories: flames, feathers, spheres, or swirls. Add additional filler patterns for cornerstones, sashing strips, and background quilting, and you have unlimited possibilities! This is not your regular pattern book to be followed line-for-line. Rather it explores unlimited quilting ideas and possibilities. Learn how to enhance the main motif by combining different background designs - curls, swirls, and other machine quilting staples - with the four basic fillers to complement the project. Whatever type of quilting system you utilize for machine quilting, freehand filler patterns provide the structure needed to hold the quilt together, to flatten the background area, or highlight the main patchwork or appliqué design.

I bought this book because I wanted to get some fresh ideas for freehand, no-marking machine quilting, and this book delivered. I didn't have to wade through pages of info on how to make a quilt top, or how to baste a top to get it ready to quilt. It jumped right into a huge number of drawings of different designs used in standard quilt blocks. You could copy, enlarge, or reduce the designs if you absolutely must mark your quilt top... -Cynthia D. Garcia

If you have trouble finding the right design when challenged with the terms “quilt as desired,” try some of Canadian longarm quilter Sue Patten’s “quilt as inspired” designs. Using 36 traditional block patterns, Sue fills them with her favorite styles of freehand quilting: swirls, flames, feathers and spheres. The book includes more than 150 worksheets to identify where and how to add quilting elements. Both hand and machine quilters will find this a valuable resource. Sue Patten offers readers her expertise on longarm quilting with a collection of lovely quilting patterns. Each page provides a close-up look at how to stitch these attractive motifs. You’ll find dozens of designs in four categories: flames, feathers, spheres, and swirls. Sue gives several suggestions for quilting each of more than 30 traditional blocks and provides options for quilting sashings and cornerstones. Lots of useful tips round out this great quilting resource. Barbara Fiedler, Quilter’s Newsletter Magazine, March 2007, page 25
