I paid full price when I purchased this book several years ago. There is actually much less content than appears, thanks to wide borders that add nothing in the way of information or examples. Many of the photographed samples feature poor work. Unfortunately, this book is not up to the standards of Anita Shackelford's beautiful work, and it seems to have been rushed into print before sufficient expertise was developed.

Anita shares her techniques for combining hand quilting with domestic machine or longarm quilting. She explains what questions should be asked as the maker plans his/her quilting. She explains and illustrates special techniques such as how to add both hand and machine trapunto and corded trapunto to your quilt and shows how to emphasize appliquéd details. Lavish illustrations and pictures accompany the precise instructions Anita gives for marking quilting motifs and background and border grids and designs. Anita's wonderful quilts are showcased, as well as quilts by other well-known artists. Projects and patterns for all levels of quilters and full sized quilting patterns are included and illustrate well her methods for combining both hand and machine quilting in the same piece. - "Unlimited Possibilities Magazine," March 2009, page 52

Torn between the look of hand quilting and the speed of machine quilting? Don’t be. Award-winning quilter Anita Shackelford shows you how to combine both into the same quilt. Detailed drawings, concise explanations, and breathtaking photos teach you where, why, and how to use different motifs and techniques to enhance your quilts and save time. Eight projects complete with all the quilting motifs, will build your skills. Anita also addresses computer-controlled domestic and longarm machines and show-quality quilting. If you enjoy finishing quilts, add this book to your library. ZJ Humbach

“A Modern Mix: Machine & Hand Quilting” by Anita Shackelford tells how to use BOTH methods in the same quilt, showing how to mix and match quilting motifs and techniques to get the most out of both. Quilting projects are offered to introduce quilters to the idea of how to mix both styles for maximum effect, making for an excellent guide for quilters from novice to advanced levels. Garden quilts are very popular among gardeners. “A Modern Mix: Machine and Hand Quilting” by Anita Shackelford features all sorts of project with garden-related motifs. The author explains how and when to combine the two techniques for both pieced and appliquéd quilts. The project with 3-D flowers will be of particular interest to gardeners. Among the projects with gardening appeal is the sunflower wall quilt as well as the tropical inspired wall quilt. For each of the projects, there is a list of the materials and supplies along with detailed, step-by-step instructions. The author walks you through every step from planning the quilt to choosing quilting designs for backgrounds and borders as well as advanced techniques, some of which feature nature and garden motifs.
