Review of Quilt a Travel Souvenir - 02/21/2009

Kimberly Einmo uses different assembly methods and ideas to produce vibrant quilt patterns inspired by the author’s European travels. From photos incorporated into quilts to Parisian Pinwheels and reflections on Market Day, these themes are unusual and lovely. Both offer strong ideas for quilters who want to move beyond the basic block patterns. Review Source: The Midwest Book Review, Library Bookwatch Newsletter, January, 2006.

Challenged by her husband to use some of the fabric she had collected during travels in Europe, Kimberly Einmo set out to create what she calls “souvenir quilts.” The 14 quilts showcase either the fabrics, such as the Dutch reproduction prints in the Delftblue quilt ICE TRAIN TO AMSTERDAM, or the setting, such as the patchwork block created to replicate the red geraniums in NOTTING HILL HIDDEN GARDEN. Techniques include piecing and appliqué, hand and machine embroidery. Enjoy traveling vicariously with Kimberly and then set out to create your own unique souvenir quilts with her inspiration. The book includes lesson plans for instructors. Review Source: "The Professional Quilter magazine," Spring 2006, page 24.

Quilt a Travel Souvenir features over a dozen memory quilts using various techniques from piecing to machine appliqué and embroidery. For each project, there is a complete list of materials, pattern pieces, and instructions for cutting, making, and assembling the quilt. In the introduction, the author explains the techniques and how to adapt the project to your personal specifications. The projects include favorite vacation sites, such as Tuscany, Greece, London, and Dutch tulip fields.
