Pat and Jenny are the doyennes of African quilting. Known for their use of bold, vibrant colors in quilts with a distinctive style, in Quilt the Beloved Country the sisters carry their love for South Africa onto the sewing table. Using predominantly appliqué, both hand and machine, they show a gallery of 19 quilts interspersed with photographs of the land, people, flora, and fauna that surround them and influence their designs. They then provide patterns for 13 quilt projects and a few dolls, showing the inspirational photograph with each project so quilters may take off on their own creative wings. Jenny and Pat make their home in Johannesburg, South Africa, and have taught internationally, including at the American Quilter's Society Quilt Show and Contest in Paducah, Kentucky. AQS was the publisher for their book, Quilt Africa, in 2004.

Both Jenny and Pat travel the world teaching fellow quilters what differentiates the art of African quilting from the more well established American and European styles. It was in 1991 when they were asked by a quilter from the US: “Where are the quilts from Africa?” and they realized there was very little quilting representative of the color and vibrancy of their beautiful continent. “Quilt the Beloved Country” is their third book on the subject and it is just beautiful. In the book are 13 quilt projects for both hand and machine appliquérs. The gallery of quilts from some of South Africa’s top quilters provides plenty of inspiration and beautiful photographs depicting the people and places that inspired the quilt. The quilts burst with color and have a unique look all their own. Many of the patterns feature stylized motifs of elephants, fish, animals and angels to name a few. I can’t choose a favorite project; they are all so vibrant and full of color and texture. If you are looking for a small project to try playing with bright fabrics and embellishments, try working on the dolls in the back of the book. --Patti Ives, Editor, The Appliqué Society Newsletter, May/June 2010, page 15.

Thirteen Africa-inspired projects demonstrate how quiltmaking in "the beloved country" compares to quiltmaking in America and Europe. One criticism is that the cover doesn't really provide a good sense of what's inside--the gallery and project sections look more like a travel journal, with dozens of gorgeous photographs of African people, wildlife, landscapes, and handcrafts printed on dramatic glossy black pages. That being said, if you want to explore African imagery in our own quilts, this book provides an excellent starting point. --Quilter's Newsletter Magazine, February 2010, page 46.
