    Description

Stencils are back - bigger, bolder, and more fun than ever. Blend images, colors, and materials to create lovely, lavish quilts. Master stencil designer, quiltartist, and teacher Marie Sturmer shares her beautiful stencil design patterns with quilters, crafters, and hobbyists. Learn the Trace & Transfer technique. Detailed instructions are given for coloring in the shapes by dry-brushing, pouncing, streaking, and circular motions, all done with acrylic paints. The author also describes a fun way to add texture from found objects, such as hardware cloth, plastic onion bags, and even chicken wire! These charming patterns can be usedfor appliqué, embroidery, and scrapbooking, and they are also useful for stenciling on walls, wood, and craft projects - any place a colored medium can be applied.

    Review of Paint-A-Quilt Patterns - 11/15/2007

Marie Monteith Sturmer offers an interesting take on adding your own personal touch to a quilt using stencils and paint. In her book “Paint-a-Quilt Patterns,” Marie explains how to go about designing a quilt using stencils. She includes complete and easy-to-follow instructions. Various stencil-painting techniques are covered, as well as how to use items you have around the house to create texture. Should you not want to work with a stencil, you can always try the trace-and-transfer method to mark your quilt then fill in with color. Acrylic paint in the squeeze bottles is recommended as the paint, although other types of paint can also be used. The chapter on color theory is good and I liked the photos of the quilts used to illustrate the different color combinations. The book has 65 patterns shown in 26 quilt and home decor projects. You will be pleasantly surprised how much depth stenciling can add to your appliqué work and the many photos will inspire you to want to give stenciling a try. Review of Paint-A-Quilt Patterns - 10/30/2007

Marie Monteith Sturmer’s “Paint-a-Quilt Patterns” focuses on stencils and how they can be adapted for appliqué, embroidery, scrapbooking and other projects. Over sixty stencil patterns are shown in nearly thirty quilt and home decoration projects, can be scaled up or down as needed for size, and are accompanied by full-page color photos of application results. The result will delight any who have wanted to incorporate stencils into a quilting project. Review Source: The Midwest Book Review, The Bookwatch, July 2007
