    3D Folded Blocks - 11/18/2010
Reviewer: Patti Ives, TAS Newsletter from USA

3D is quite the rage these days. Why not take the 3D phenomenon to your quilting too. In Canadian authors Geesje Barron and Esther Vermeer’s new book “3D Folded Blocks,” you learn to create traditional quilt blocks that have dimension. This is all done by cleverly folding squares and rectangles to create the block. These blocks are definitely fat-quarter friendly and will really pop off the piece. The step-by-step instructions and accompanying photographs make it easy to follow along. While the author’s aren’t particularly fans of appliqué, they did create a couple cute projects where they placed one-dimensional block in their piece then used oil paint sticks to create leaves. I thought that was a great use of just one block in a project. There are 12 projects included in the book and instructions for 70 blocks ranging from simple to a bit more complicated. These projects and blocks would make terrific gifts. --Patti Ives, The Appliqué Society Newsletter, Sept/Oct 2010, page 16.

3D Folded Quilt Blocks offers keys to creating three-dimensional blocks for some 70 traditional and original blocks. Twelve projects range from wallhangings and a shopping bag to a trinket box and use fat-quarter-friendly blocks in easy projects perfect for newcomers to the concept! Quilting libraries need this! Geesje Baron & Esther Vermeer have taken fabric folding to a new level. These blocks really do look like they're pieced. I have only made a few of them (for practice), but I really enjoyed doing them. The instructions are simple, and you're taken step-by-step through the process. It's nice the authors identified each block as either easy, intermediate or advanced so you know what you're getting into before you start. And I just love the Trinket Box which is great to make for Christmas gifts.
