    Description

From Alaska to Hawaii, every U.S. state has its beloved flower, and all have been made into quilts before. Since the idea of sewing state flowers onto quilts first took hold, these have been some of the most popular patterns of all time. Each 20 inch-24 inch original design flower block can stand alone as a wallhanging or be combined into a heritage project showing where a quilter's family members live. The basic appliqué and ribbon work techniques can be mixed and matched to suit every quilter's taste. The pattern CD includes a wonderful bonus-information on each state or territory such as its date of statehood, nickname, motto, state bird, state tree, and more. Students can rely on this information as a resource and quilters can use these tidbits to embroider and enhance their projects.

    America's Quilted Garden Blocks - 07/18/2012
Reviewer: Patti Ives, TAS Newsletter from USA

Faye Labanaris has designed 55 unique flower wreath blocks for her new book “America’s Quilted Garden Blocks”. Faye originally started designing state flower blocks to offer the different groups that hired her to either teach a class or give a lecture. Over time she managed to build up quite a collection as she traveled from state to state. It was a labor of love for Faye to undertake completing all 50 state flower blocks. Each 20”-- 24” block stands alone, use several to create a wall hanging or design your own heritage project showing where you or your family members live or have lived. While the designs are beautiful in themselves, the instructions that come along with each block are well worth the price of the book. Mix and match the basic appliqué and ribbon work techniques to suit your own style. You will find advice on stitching, embroidery, trouble shooting and a wealth of instructions on dimensional flowers using ribbons. The illustrations are very clear and easy to understand. Patterns are not in the book itself but can be found on the accompanying CD. The pattern CD contains 144 pages packed with information on the states including their state flower, capitol, and other bits of trivia. Each finished state block can be found on the CD allowing you to zoom in to see details. You will find patterns and sewing instructions for Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico, U.S. Virgin Islands, Guam and American Samoa on the CD. The CD is practically a book in itself that anyone interested in the history of America and her states would enjoy reading. The patterns are in PDF format which will allow you to easily print them out on your own printer. --Patti Ives, The Applique Society Newsletter, May/June 2012, Volume 15, No. 5, page 16.

So many patterns, so little time. I LOVE this book. There are so many flower design elements that can be used separately or together with stunning results. The Kansas block looks inspired by an antique quilt. Best yet is the CD Rom with the block patterns. You can zoom it to observe the quilt blocks in more detail. Great!
