The Quilt Life As I See It...
For most quilters—including me—there is a moment of great awakening. It doesn’t happen when your spouse is pushed to the edge because you spent too much on fabric. It’s not the point where you realize you’ve made a quilt for every friend and family member you know—and yet you still continue to make quilts. The real awakening for quilters happens when they realize their passion for quilting has become a way of life. I celebrate the fact that the show chairman’s living and dining rooms are filled with stacks and stacks of quilts waiting to be numbered and labeled before being taken to the local show site while the rest of family is banished to the nether regions of the dreary and dank downstairs den. This is all just part of living the life of a quilter.
I knew I was living a quilting lifestyle when I finally stopped hesitating to tell strangers on a plane what I did for a living. “Well sir, you see, I’m a quilter!” Just imagine how that goes over! I’d spend the next hour and a half explaining that I was an international teacher, author, and artist.
I tell quilters not to worry or fret if you get passionately involved in your project and suddenly dinner will have to be hastily prepared, if there’s any dinner at all. I sincerely mean it when I say that when the final page of your life has been written, your family won’t remember that they had to eat warmed-over dinners. I believe that your family will remember, and even treasure, their wonderful “quilt life” and all the wonderful quilts that were created with love and passion by a person who understood that quilting is a way of life. If that describes you, you’ll find our new magazine, The Quilt Life, has been created with you in mind.
