Grand Rapids, Michigan, to Host American Quilter's Society
AQS Quilt Show & Contest in 2012
by Bonnie Browning, Executive Show Chair
Paducah, Ky., January 6, 2011 – The American Quilter’s Society announces that the DeVos Place, Grand Rapids, Michigan, has been selected as the location for the summer AQS Quilt Show & Contest beginning August 22 – 25, 2012. AQS signed a 3-year agreement that will bring an estimated 15 million dollars to Grand Rapids for each show. Attendance of more than 10,000 annually is expected, with quilt enthusiasts coming from 40 states and 10 countries.
“Grand Rapids and its convention center make a great venue for the AQS Quilt Show & Contest,” said Meredith Schroeder, AQS president. “The attached Amway Grand Plaza Hotel and other downtown hotels plus adequate parking at and near the convention center make this an easy event for the quilters to attend,” said Schroeder. “They can check into their hotel, park their car, and enjoy the quilt show, downtown restaurants, and nearby attractions for four full days.”
More than $40,000 in cash prizes will be awarded in the quilt contest to be held during the show. Hundreds of quilts will be exhibited and $10,000 will be awarded to the quilt designated as Best of Show. The contest rules will be available in March 2011.
A 350-booth Merchant Mall will offer the latest in quiltmaking supplies, antique and new quilts, and 150 classes in the AQS School of Quiltmaking will be available. Registration information for the AQS Quilt Show in Grand Rapids will be available in February 2012.
