Fantastic Fibers 2015
Dates: April 11 - June 6, 2015
The Yeiser Art Center (YAC) is pleased to again be hosting the annual international juried fiber arts competition, Fantastic Fibers. As one of YAC's most engaging, innovative & colorful international exhibitions, Fantastic Fibers is an inspirational "must see" for quilters and textile art enthusiasts across the globe.
Kentucky fiber artist Laverne Zabielski of Truly Wearable Art co-juried this year's exhibition with Marcia Young, editor in chief of Fiber Art Now magazine. Together the team scored 430 entries from 37 states and 16 countries for inclusion in this significant exhibition. 60 works by 54 artists from 18 states and 2 countries (United Kingdom & Canada) were selected for Fantastic Fibers 2015.
YAC premiered Fantastic Fibers in 1987 as a wearable art show. "The theme of the 2015 show honors this history while showcasing the innovative techniques and creativity of today's fiber artists," said Rosemarie Steele, Fantastic Fibers 2015 coordinator. "The selection of jurors reflects that. Labielski and Young are both deeply connected in the fiber art community. With an abundance of outstanding entries to choose from, it was very comforting to know the selection process was in their experienced and capable hands."
Fantastic Fibers 2015 will be on display April 11 - June 6. The exhibition is an American Quilter's Society (AQS) sanctioned event, which means Fantastic Fibers will be seen by thousands of viewers as more than 30,000 visitors from across the globe attend AQS QuiltWeek®. This year's AQS QuiltWeek dates are April 22-25, 2015.
The winners of $1,750 in awards will be announced on April 11 at the Opening Reception, 5-7 p.m. The top two awards are sponsored by former Mayors of Paducah, Gerry B. Montgomery (1988-95) & William F. Paxton (2001-12). Montgomery sponsored the $1,000 first place award and Paxton is sponsoring the $500 second place award. Fiber Art Now magazine, an exciting print & digital magazine for contemporary textiles & fiber arts, is sponsoring the 3rd place $250 award. Juror Laverne Zabielski will present a short reading at the opening reception from one of her writings.
Paducah plays an important role in the connectivity of cultures, and YAC is proud to be a part of this. Paducah's international connections in the area of quilting/fiber arts as well as YAC's long standing commitment to Fantastic Fibers attributed to Paducah being designated an UNESCO Creative City in the area of Crafts & Folk Art in November 2013.
Please visit YAC during this incredible exhibition to celebrate 28 years of fiber art recognition at the center and view the work of fantastic basket makers, weavers, embroiderers, quilters and more.
Located in downtown Paducah, the Yeiser Art Center is a non-profit visual arts organization celebrating more than fifty years of serving the community through exhibitions and education throughout the Tri-State Region.
