Rotary Quilt Show to Feature World War II Quilts

Robert Cherry Civic Center, 2701 Park Avenue in Paducah

by West Kentucky Star Staff Writer

PADUCAH, Ky., April 14, 2010 - Quilt making’s stamp on America’s history will be on full display during this year’s Paducah Rotary Club Antique Quilt Show and Sale.

In honor of the 65th anniversary of the end of World War II, Paducah’s Rotary Club antique quilt exhibit features the best of Sue Reich’s collection of quilts from the war years. The Rotary show and sale takes place April 20-24 at the Robert Cherry Civic Center, 2701 Park Avenue in Paducah. The show coincides with the American Quilter’s Society Quilt Show in Paducah.

Reich, a Connecticut quilt historian, author and researcher, brings her collection of quilts made in the time period from 1941-1945. Reich will offer interpretive presentations on her collection at 10 am and 3 pm Tuesday through Friday, and 1 pm on Saturday.

“Many American women made warm and attractive quilts to benefit U.S. soldiers during the period 1940-1945, either as outright gifts or as raffle items to raise money for good causes,” said Reich. “These quilts were made while our fathers, grandfathers and other loved ones were on the battlefront.”

Many of the quilts feature military insignias and designs that help tell the story of one of the most volatile times in U.S. history. Reich’s collection of WWII quilts has been exhibited at the Quilter’s Hall of Fame, the American Museum of Science and Energy, and the New England Quilt Museum.

In addition to the WWII exhibit, the 22nd annual Rotary show and sale features a display of Hoffman Challenge Quilts. Dozens of quilt supply vendors also have booths at the Rotary show.

Admission is $5 to the show for the entire week, with all proceeds going to the Rotary Education Assistance Program (REAP) which offers college scholarships to deserving students in Paducah and McCracken County. As a tribute to this year’s patriotic theme, all military veterans will be offered free admission to the Rotary show.

Show hours are from 9 am to 6 pm Tuesday through Friday, and 9 am to 4 pm on Saturday. The show is an officially sanctioned American Quilter’s Society event. For more information, contact the Rotary Club at 270-442-3418 or view the show’s website at http://www.paducahrotary.org/quilt_show.
