Quilting Community AQS News

Students can benefit from online tutoring

by Roswell Daily Record

The Roswell Public Library is proud to support local quilters with many books and DVDs that include patterns, tips & tricks, and quick projects. The American Quilter’s Society has produced educational videos to help new quilters learn as well as sharing something new with seasoned quilters. One DVD, “Borders & Finishing Touches” features Bonnie K. Browning, a recognized name in the world of quilting. She is a master quilt judge and has won many awards for her talents — two of her quilts are in the National Quilt Museum. She has written numerous books and enjoys teaching her skills through videos.

Bonnie is very patient and explains everything precisely, including sharing extra tips and tricks that a beginner would not already know. The video is well-organized and has plenty of close-up shots to see exactly what she is talking about when she explains what she is doing.

Chapters include mitering the corners and adding piping (fabric rolled around a piece of cord) on your quilt, which adds an intriguing design and dimension to your finished item. Mitered quilt corners are like mitered wood corners — it’s about making the two ends come together in an exact, neat diagonal line in each corner. Another lesson is on making shark’s teeth — a border design for quilts. In the process, Bonnie used paper and shared her folding technique to create the template for the design which involves measuring and cutting the strips and then using glue to fold the edges into the center. What a great way to make perfect little points around the outside of your design. Prairie points look similar to shark’s teeth although a different method is used to create them.

Bonnie then shows how to construct a mitered binding from a bias strip. This involves sewing fabric into a sleeve, and then cutting it to make a long strip which can then be added to the outside border of a quilt. She shares her experience in what methods work best and why.

Other DVDs in this series include, “3 Embellished Fabric Bags” and “Fast & Fun Raw Edge Wallhanging”. These can all be found under the call number 746.46 in the Non-Fiction section of DVDs. Check them out!
