WKCTC's Online Quilting Program Reaches Throughout the World
by Laura Grumley

Paducah, KY - Sayoko Fujii lives halfway around the world in the Shibuya district of Tokyo, Japan, but is able to work on her Master Quilting Certificate offered by West Kentucky Community and Technical College and the American Quilter’s Society in the comfort of her own home.
Fujii, 52, is one of a growing number of individuals around the world who are turning to online classes to help them get higher education credentials.
A recent partnership between WKCTC and AQS allows students to earn college credit in quilting classes through three options: at quilt shows in Paducah, KY, Nashville, TN, and Des Moines, IA; at classes offered by the Museum of the American Quilter’s Society in Paducah; or online quilt classes through WKCTC.
Dr. Paul McInturff, vice president of institutional and economic development at WKCTC, launched the first online quilting classes in October. “These online classes will enable students such as Sakoyo to complete their certificates in less time. Students from all over the world can register for online classes and complete them at their own pace––as quickly or as slowly as they choose,” said McInturff.
There are four types of quilting certificates available: Basic, Intermediate, Advanced, and Master Quilting.
Fujii said she first became aware of the beauty of quilts after seeing a handmade quilt completed by her sister-in-law. She eventually taught herself to quilt, and has made hundreds of quilts over the years. She enters quilt contests twice a year. On her most recent visit to Paducah’s quilt show, Fujii said she saw an article about receiving a Master Quilting Certificate through WKCTC. The 25-credit hour Master Quilting Certificate provides a student with advanced knowledge of quilting software and technology.
After debating for a while about joining the program, she finally did. “I don’t know how long (it will) take,” Fujii said. “but I would like to continue until I get the certificate.”
