Teri Henderson Tope
Teri Henderson Tope always wanted to be an artist and have a house full of children when she grew up. Well, she became a quilter and her three daughters are nine and five years apart (14 years between the oldest and the youngest) ensuring that there would always be children in her house. You have got to love God’s sense of humor.
Always creative, Teri tried every medium available to her from sewing clothes for her Barbie® dolls on an old Singer sewing machine, making macramé plant hangers, 4-H projects, the most unusual Halloween pumpkins and snowmen on the block, to stitching her wedding dress, and then sewing quilts and clothes for her girls.
She found quilting around 1983 and it became her passion and her muse. Her fabric collection grew, as did her frustration with the patterns available to her in the marketplace. Soon she was giving them her Teri Tope Twist and eventually began designing her own original quilts. Bev Young, a local quilt shop owner, encouraged Teri to create patterns based on those designs. Soon Teri was publishing under her company name, maTERIal Girl Designs. To date, she has published over 40 original quilt patterns and has authored a book Applique in Reverse published by AQS in 2009.
Teri’s infectious love of design, techniques, and fabric has made her a sought-after teacher and lecturer. She has managed to win an award or two for her beautiful quilts, but when asked, she will simply tell you about her love for the process. And if you are lucky, she will pull you into her wonderfully creative and artistic world and maybe even show you a picture of her grandsons.
