Description
Merging two traditional blocks gave Carl the dynamic design result he sought. Combining Rail Fence with Lemoyne Star yielded his Stars 'N Strips block, and elevated his quilts into national competition. Just vary the number of fabrics used or change their placement to create a limitless number of blocks. Several sized blocks are shown, along with two variations. 10 projects get the reader started. Only a few simple tools are needed to create outstanding quilts. This book is perfect for the confident beginner and will satisfy the desire to grow for intermediate and advanced stitchers.

Actually I came to this site looking for corrections to this book. There is no way the cover quilt, directions starting on page 48, is made with the strips in dark/light/medium order.

One strength of this book is that while the patterns are built around stars, each quilt or project has a distinct look of its own which arises from print and color selection and placement. July Sparkler and Christmas Jewel are especially attractive and show the range of themes possible.

Robert DeCarli's quilts create visual movement through change in the size of the logs and placement of color and value which give the illusion of curves. Many of his quilts feature complementary colors for bold contrast, but you could soften the effect with other color choices. The book contains a good range of interesting designs for a traditional block.

Creating Le Moyne Stars (also called Eight-Pointed Stars) with patches cut from sewn strip-sets adds a lot of interest and graphic appeal to a classic block pattern. One of my favorite quilts in the book is called "City Blocks," and it’s made with triangles left over from another pattern in the book–clever. The reader should know that the supply list includes two specific rulers, Fons & Porter Half & Quarter Ruler by Omnigrid and Easy Angle Ruler by Sharon Hultgren.
