Flowers, foliage, and vines are beautifully displayed on black and white backgrounds by the author, Kay M. Capps Cross. She used quick and easy, fusible appliques and simple strip piecing. The 11 projects include table runners and bed quilts as well as throws and wallhangings. These quilts depict various aspects of gardening from tiled garden paths and neat rows in vegetable gardens to wildflower meadows and freshly cut flowers in vases. This title has detailed, simple and easy, color illustrated directions. There are tips on choosing your fabrics with a list of what you will need. For each project, there is a cutting chart and instructions for sewing, appliqueing, and finished the quilt. This book features full size applique pattern pieces and paper piecing templates for those projects that are foundation pieced.

Some quilters like to concentrate on one method or design. Kay M. Capps Cross likes to use black and white fabrics in her quilts. She adds a spot of color here and there, but mostly, she sticks to black and white prints and solids.
I bet you think her quilts are boring--if so, you are wrong. It isn’t easy to create projects using these two non-colors, but each quilt in “A Black & White Garden” is an interesting study of flowers. There is always added color, but Kay’s claim to fame is using black and white.
Just in case you don’t like black and white quilts, Kay has provided a colored sample of the projects to help you envision them in color. She knows not everyone shares her fascination with quilts with just a few splashes of color. It might be time for you to try making a small quilt garden, and whether you choose to use black and white or color, you will enjoy the patterns in this book.--SLH
