Review of Quilt a Travel Souvenir - 10/30/2009

Summertime is vacation time. It is the time to travel to places near and far. Quilters know that means stopping at quilt shops along the way. Keep a permanent record of your trip in fabric using the hints provided in “Quilt a Travel Souvenir” by Kimberly Einmo. Kimberly is obviously well traveled. As an Air Force wife, she has had opportunities to live in foreign places, so her travel quilts are rather exotic. The book is filled with patterns in which she used fabrics from exciting places. I, like Kimberly, try to buy fabric on every trip–something to remember it by–but I haven’t done a very good job of journaling my purchases and using them in quilts. If you would like to keep track of your travels in quilts, “Quilt a Travel Souvenir” is a great book for you. Sandra L. Hatch, Quilter’s World magazine, August 2007, page 10

Though the book is not yet out, I have taken over a half dozen classes with Kimberly. Her directions are always clear, her class samples are beautiful and her creativity grows with each project she does. She has always tried new techniques and rulers with great results. If you get the chance to take her classes, please do! They are fun and you come out with a beautiful memory to go with your quilt. Best of luck, Kimberly.

Seasoned traveler Kimberly Einmo shows how to capture the feeling of that special vacation spot in your own memory quilt, especially if you’ve collected some fabric along the way, in Quilt a Travel Souvenir. Let your sense of adventure lead you to try new quiltmaking techniques as suggested throughout this book. Plenty of tips and tricks give good results and save time, so you’ll have the quilt done before your next excursion. Kimberly’s comprehensive lesson plans for those who wish to teach from this book are a bonus. Review Source: Irene Berry, "Quilter’s Newsletter Magazine," May 2006, Issue 382, Page 23.

Before you pack your suitcases and head off on a well-deserved summer holiday, pick up Quilt a Travel Souvenir by Kimberly Einmo from American Quilter’s Society. Its ideas and helpful hints for memory quilts apply not only to the author’s travels through Europe, but also to wherever your travels take you. Tips for using machine embroidery and purchasing local fabrics guide you in creating a personal fabric scrapbook of your special trip. Kimberly Einmo is a lady after my heart. Like me, after quilting, one of her favorite interests is traveling. In this book, Quilt a Travel Souvenir, she demonstrates how she managed to combine both. Unfortunately, her quilts are machine pieced, so cannot be created whilst on holiday, but she turns each of her holidays into an adventure to dream up the next quilt, purchasing exotic fabrics and finding appropriate quilt blocks. Although Kimberly is American, each of the quilts highlighted is based on her trips around Europe. There are photos from her trips, including one of her husband surrounded by bags of fabric, and she gives some details of what inspired her at each location. She shares fourteen of these quilts in this book, along with her opinions on piecing and equipment for the quilter. Each quilt is block pieced and comes with complete instructions on how to recreate it, along with ideas on how to personalize the quilt for yourself. She is a firm believer in challenging yourself to try something new with each quilt, so there are ideas and helpful hints scattered amongst the instructions. Although a travel book, it would also appeal to those looking for new ideas on block pieced quilts as these are no beginners’ projects.
