Do you have any quilt idols -- those quilters whose books you’ve bought, quilts you’ve drooled over, or techniques you would LOVE to learn? One of my “it girls” of quilting is Gwen Marston. Once (and still) known for her folk appliqué, Gwen now focuses on “liberated quiltmaking” (see her books “Liberated Quiltmaking” and “Liberated Quiltmaking II,” published by the American Quilter’s Society). The Sock Monkey quilt I shared with you some time ago was made with liberated techniques in a book by Gwen and Freddy Moran (Collaborative Quilting, Sterling Publishing 2006). --Elisa Sims Albury

In this sequel to her 1996 “Liberated Quiltmaking,” Gwen plumbs new depths in her stash and her students’/friends’ efforts in the liberated method of quiltmaking. Here’s what defines Gwen’s fabri-freedom: No rules, no prescribed finished dimensions, no cutting instructions and no worries about running out of fabric. For her second lib-book, Gwen has updated the lessons and totally blown any boundaries with a new set of quilts. Her quilts are gorgeous, vibrant, throbbing masses of color and stitching that leave you gasping for more. No templates, no patterns, no rules -- sounds good to me! “Liberated Quiltmaking II” by Gwen Marston is all about fun -- having stressless fun while quiltmaking. She teaches nine easy-handed techniques that result in visually exciting quilts.
