The National Quilt Museum's annual New Quilts from an Old Favorite contest once again has brought out the best in creativity from today's talented quiltmakers. Quilts are selected for their excellence in design and techniques, their innovations, and their contributions to an exhibit showing the wide range of designs and styles the selected traditional pattern can inspire. With the favorite Orange Peel traditional block as a starting point, a dizzying array of original interpretations is included in this companion volume to the contest and exhibit. Each quiltmaker or team of quiltmakers describes their experience of creating a unique rendering of this much-loved pattern. Original sketches and inspiration, design problems and solutions, techniques both new and old are all described in the quilters' own words.

For the past 18 years The National Quilt Museum has gathered creative quilting minds to express themselves through their “New Quilts from an Old Favorite” contest. This years challenge was that old favorite block “Orange Peel”. This book takes the reader on a journey of discovery as the 23 quiltmakers that participated in this year’s competition share their interpretation of the classic block. You will learn
how each quiltmaker came about creating their own design as well as some of the tricks and tips they used in their beautiful quilts. Sometimes we need a break from our quilting to step back and take time to read how others create. This book lets the reader do exactly that. You will recognize some of the names in the book and you will also enjoy reading about how some used appliqué in their designs. The photos of the 18 finished quilts will inspire you. The interviews with the quiltmakers will help you understand their thought processes behind the designs. You may even find a technique or tip you would like to try on your next project. I really look forward to this book every year. It is amazing how creative the people are who enter the contest. I love seeing how they take traditional block patterns to a new level. It is even more amazing to read about their thought process and how what they start out with ends up being something totally different. You'll love this book (and all the books in the series).
