    Baltimore Garden Quilt - 05/12/2012
Reviewer: James A. Cox, Edtor-in-Chief from Oregon, WI, USA

"Baltimore Garden Quilt" offers a tutorial on a 25 block, original 1848 quilt and teaches the author’s method for creating its multilayer flowers. Directions range from selecting fabrics to using hand or machine techniques and cutting individual blocks, and are accompanied by a CD which includes some 20 additional unique flowers and full-size block patterns for printing. It's a fine collection packed with color examples and perfect patterns for producing fine quilts. --James A. Cox, Editor-in-Chief, The Bookwatch, Midwest Book Review, May 2012.

Barbara Burnham bought a well-used and probably well-loved quilt from 1848 and carefully reproduced it. A special feature of the book is the presentation of the pictures of the new finished blocks juxtaposed against pictures of the old. The patterns for each block, along with their quilting designs, are on a CD included with the book. In the book she gives fabric suggestions and amounts, supply lists, and cutting diagrams for blocks and border. Her great gift is in the outlined and colored boxes that are found throughout the book—practical hints for successful appliqué. This section is easy to follow and can be very useful for beginning appliqué artists. In the middle of the book Barbara presents “Additional Techniques.” For beginning quiltmakers and especially for the experts of appliqué, this section presents new ways to make very complicated flower designs. In addition to the hand quilting techniques, Barbara gives us some suggestions of how to select and prepare the quilt for a longarm quilter. She is realistic about time limitations of hand quilting the big quilts and helps us to choose the best quilter for our work. Baltimore Appliqué Society Newsletter, Society Sampler, Volume 19, Number 7, March 2012, pages 11-12. The review was written by BAS member Janet Esch.

The book features reproductions of lush floral blocks that look more complex to stitch than they are, because the author developed simplified appliqué methods. Another plus, she gives directions and tips on completing the top assembly and the quilting both by machine or by hand.

This is a beautiful Baltimore album quilt that was originally created in 1848. Photos of the original blocks are shown on each page along with photos of the block redone by hand and by machine. The full size patterns are included on a CD. There are very detailed instructions given for every step of this quilt, including fusible appliqué or needle turn appliqué (depending on your preference), embroidery, binding, and quilting it. There are a lot of great hints and tips included throughout the book. If you’ve never tried anything as complex as this before, there is no need to feel intimidated since the instructions for everything you need to know are included.
