Shows & Contests: 2011 AQS Quilt Show & Contest - Des Moines

2011 AQS Quilt Show - Des Moines, IAGeneral Information

About Our Show

Welcome to the 4th Annual AQS Quilt Show & Contest in Des Moines, Iowa, September 28 - October 1, 2011. Des Moines is easy to reach by air, car, or motor coach. It is at the intersection of the number one and three most traveled interstates in the United States: I-80 (coast-to-coast) and I-35 (border to border). The AQS Quilt Show will be held at the Iowa Events Center, 730 Third Street, located just off the Third Street exit on I-235 in downtown Des Moines.

A gigantic Merchant Mall will have all of the latest quiltmaking supplies + new and antique quilts + quilt-related gifts - it's a dream shopping mall for any quilter.

Quilters will be vying for more than $44,000 in cash awards in the AQS Quilt Contest. More than 1,000 quilts will be on display including:

  • AQS Quilt Contest
  • Annual show of the Moines Area Quilters Guild quilts using the theme: A Community of Quilts & Quilters.

A variety of special quilt exhibits will be featured:

  • 2012 Pilgrim/Roy Invitational Quilt Challenge
  • AQS Authors' Quilt Exhibit
  • International Sunbonnet Sue Quilt Contest
  • New Quilts from an Old Favorite: Orange Peel, semifinalists in the annual contest of the National Quilt Museum, Paducah, Kentucky
  • Quilted Yurt by Linzi Upton, Scotland
  • World War II Quilts from the collection of Sue Reich

The Des Moines Area Quilters Guild will also have a raffle quilt, Gathering Prairie Petals, and the Treasured Quilts exhibit will feature quilts made for community spirit. One quilt of special interest is the Iowa Sesquicentennial Quilt. An Education Center will be available for children and adults to learn more about quilting. Some of the 150 quilts that will be presented to the Des Moines Veteran's Home patients will also be on display.
