2023 AQS & AccuQuilt-Along Project: Shoo Fly Spin Quilt

Shoo Fly Spin Quilt

We hope you enjoyed the August quilt along as we made the Shoo Fly Spinning Quilt. Take a look at everyone's project in the Show & Tell at the bottom of this post. If you're still working on your quilt, be sure to show it off in the AQS Quilting Project Parade Facebook Group and we'll add it to the Show & Tell section below.

Shoo Fly Spin Quilt

Download the GO! Shoo Fly Spin Throw Quilt pattern here.

The pattern for this project is also available for the following GO! Qube sizes: 4”, 6”, 8”, and 9”.
We won’t be going any larger with this pattern because the finished size would be so large – but you’re certainly welcome to use the 10” or 12” GO! Qubes if you want to tackle a really BIG quilt!

Finished Throw Quilt Size: 48" x 63"

Fabric Requirements

Red - 2 yards
Medium Gray - 1 1/4 yards
White - 2-1/2 yards
Dark Gray - 1 yard
Batting - 56” x 71”
Backing - 56” x 71”

Cutting System

GO! Qubes
Back by popular demand, is a project based on our GO! Qube Mix & Match shapes, but with a bit of a twist. This project shows you how to use those eight basic GO! Qube Mix & Match shapes alongside the GO! Qube Companion-Corners.

The pattern uses the 5” finished size of the GO! Qube and Companion. This is the size that AccuQuilt Cutting Experts Pam and Erica will be working with and is the size used in the original design by Marjorie Busby of Blue Feather Quilt Studio, but wait, there’s a twist! The blocks we’ll be making for this quilt will finish at 7½ inches!

Be sure to check out AccuQuilt's blog post for all the details.

What Size Blocks?
If you find yourself scratching your head and wondering how we’re going to create 7½” finished blocks from the 5” GO! Qube, well, just stay tuned!

This design takes you beyond our standard 4-patch or 2 x 2 grid layout to a 3 x 3 grid layout. Getting comfortable with expanding the basic grid is one of the keys to getting the most from your GO! Qubes and we can’t wait to show you more!

Our project will finish at 48½” x 63½”, but of course, we have plenty of options available for you!

Pattern modification for those using the rotary cutting instructions

1. Draw a diagonal line on the wrong side of each white Half Square Triangle (HST) (Shape
12.1). Place a marked square on a corner of a gray square (Shape 11.1), right sides together.
Stitch on the marked line. Trim away the excess fabric, leaving a 1/4" seam allowance.

Week One - Cut and Organize

The Spin Block & The Shoo Fly Block

Spin Block

This week we'll be cutting the pieces for the Spin block and the Shoo Fly block. If you are using an AccuQuilt Cutting System be sure to check out their blog post. If you've rotary cut, then you'll want to organize your block pieces.

If your fabric colors match the pattern (like Pam), you’re ready to jump right in, but if you’re changing things up (like Erica), you may want to stop and make yourself a color chart, or change the colors in your pattern, so you cut the correct pieces.

Work your way through your colors and cut all the pieces for the blocks. If you know what you want to do for borders and binding, you can “GO!” ahead and cut them all, setting them aside for later.

Organizing

As with any project, it’s helpful to keep your pieces organized. You can use a plastic box with dividers, marking the sections with the shape number or measurement; plastic bags are also a great option for sorting your pieces.

Baskets, trays, boxes – whatever is handy and works for you works!

Week Two - Sew the Spin Blocks

This block is made up of three units: Corner Units, Flying Geese, and a Square in a Square.

If you are following along using the rotary cutting instructions, be sure to check out the pattern note at the bottom of the cutting instructions above.

Double check the pattern for the correct orientation while sewing the units and unit placement when assembling the block. It's easy to get things pointing in the wrong direction.

The Spin blocks are the most complicated part of this project, so take it easy on yourself!

Week Three - Sew the Shoo Fly Blocks

Shoo Fly Block

The Shoo Fly block is similar to a Nine Patch block but with Half Square Triangles in the corners.

You’ll only need to create 17 of these blocks, and you’ll have them put together in no time at all, leaving you time this week to keep working on your Spin blocks from last week.

Remember, quilt alongs are for fun, so don’t stress over getting your blocks all done in a week, just do what works for you.

Week Four - Assembly

Now it's time to put it all together!

Sew along with Pam and Erica as they put together their quilt tops. You won’t want to miss out on tips and tricks! You can watch them live in the AQS Quilting Project Parade Facebook group on Wednesday, August 23, 2023, at 12 p.m. CDT. If you missed last week's sewing session, you can find the link below in the schedule.

The fun of a quilt along is seeing and being inspired by what everyone is doing, so be sure to post pictures of your progress every step of the way using #AQSews so we can all see! If you haven’t joined the AQS Quilting Project Parade Facebook group yet, be sure to! It’s a great, supportive community where we can all share and help each other.
