Week One

Pour a cup of tea and get ready because it’s time to cut out the pieces for our new quilt-along for the Warm Wishes Wall Hanging by Amanda Harward of Larkspur Quilts.

If you would like to use AccuQuilt dies to cut out your quilt, you'll see the pattern calls for the GO! Half Square Triangle-2” Finished Square Multiples (55063), but did you know that shape appears on other dies as well? It can also be found on the GO! Value Die (55018) and in the GO! Qube Mix & Match both 4” and 8” Finished Blocks. It will be Shape 3 in the 4” and Shape 5 in the 8”. It doesn’t matter which one you use, however your fabric prep directions will vary by the die you are using. Visit the AccuQuilt blog to learn more about preparing your fabrics for cutting with dies.

However you decide to cut your pattern, here are the basics you’ll want to gather up:

  • Free, downloadable pattern for assembly directions and fabric requirements
  • Rotary cutting mat, rotary cutter and an acrylic quilting ruler
  • Fabric
  • Iron-on fusible.

So, grab your pattern and let’s get started.

Preparing Your Applique Fabrics

Next up, we need to cut out the applique shapes. Whether you are cutting shapes with GO! dies or the free, downloadable templates above, you will want to prepare your fabric before cutting your shapes out by pressing a lightweight fusible product onto the wrong side of your fabric.

When cutting your shapes, keep in mind that both the teacup and the teapot are directional, so be sure you have your handles and spouts facing the way you want!

Week Two

With our pieces cut and ready, it’s time to start creating the pieced and applique blocks.

This week, we’re going to be making the Broken Dishes blocks that make up the border for this
project. This block is fantastic for chain piecing. Start by sewing your dark and light half square triangles together and pressing them to the dark side.

Next, lay out the blocks checking that all the units have the correct orientation, then sew the units into pairs pressing to the dark side. This helps to nest your units together to
form blocks with picture-perfect points in the middle.

Once the block is completed, turn it over so the wrong side of the block is facing up. Remove a stitch or two from the seam allowance at the center of the block, open the center and press the seams on either side of it in opposite directions. This will help reduce the bulk. You’ll know you have it right when you see a tiny 4-patch in the center.

Last week, when we cut our applique shapes we ironed fusible onto the back of the fabric
before cutting, which means we are all ready to get started. You’ll need an iron and ironing
board or mat for this step, and your first decision is how you plan to finish the edges of your
shapes.

Visit the AccuQuilt blog to learn how Pam and Erica are appliqueing their shapes. Pick your favorite method.
