Kathy Dunigan, AQS QuiltWeek Instructor

Are you ready to dive into the wonderful world of quilting? We're thrilled to introduce you to our newest instructor at AQS QuiltWeek, Kathy Dunigan. Her journey through the world of quilting is a heartwarming story of passion, creativity, and endless inspiration. Let's get to know her better.

FROM BAYOUS TO QUILTING BLISS

Hailing from the charming southern town of Tallulah, Louisiana, Kathy now calls the stunning coastal city of Destin, Florida, her home. She's not only an expert quilter but also a loving mother of three and a proud grandmother of two adorable little ones. Kathy's life experiences add a unique touch to her quilting, making it a truly heartwarming adventure.

Growing up in the midst of the picturesque bayous and alongside the mighty Mississippi River, Kathy developed a deep love for nature, especially the lush foliage and vibrant flowers. This love for the outdoors shines through in every quilt she creates. She believes in making the best of every situation, and her life's journey through different places has greatly influenced her quilting style.

A QUILTING JOURNEY BEGINS

Kathy's incredible quilting journey began in 1987 when she simply wanted to create a baby quilt for her first child. With no formal training, she learned the art of quilting through trial and error. It wasn't always smooth sailing, but her unshakable determination led her to discover her true calling – Baltimore Album quilts and Appliqué.

Kathy's dedication to these art forms led her to study extensively and learn from the renowned Elly Sienkiewicz, a true master of quilting. The joy of quilting grew within her, and it eventually led her to own "The Quilted Peach Fabric Shoppe," a place she adored for the friendships she formed through this incredible art form.

TEACHING THE ART OF APPLIQUÉ

Since 1993, Kathy has been sharing her Appliqué expertise with others, grabbing every chance to teach. In 2015, she set up the "Kathy Dunigan Academy of Appliqué," and she's got exciting plans for more events in the pipeline.

When you join one of Kathy's workshops, get ready for an enthusiastic and lively classroom that matches her "Chatty Kathy" personality. She believes quilting isn't just a pastime; it's all about having a blast. Kathy knows that students invest both time and money in learning and having fun, and she's committed to making sure they do just that.

NO FAIL APPLIQUÉ: AN APPROACH FOR EVERYONE

Kathy's teaching style is hands-on, full of one-on-one demonstrations, and lots of movement. She encourages her students to think outside the box and get creative with designs. When you leave her classes, you'll be excited to continue your quilting journey. Her classes offer easy Appliqué techniques, and there's no pressure to stick to a single method. Kathy's approach is all about "No Fail Appliqué," designed to boost the confidence of quilters at every level, from beginners to seasoned pros.

BRINGING NATURE TO LIFE IN YOUR QUILTS

Kathy's favorite projects often feature beautiful floral and nature motifs, and she loves to teach students how to make their creations shine. Her kits include everything you need for a spectacular result. Lately, her classes have focused on the "turned edge appliqué technique," known for its accessibility, forgiveness, and pure fun.

"My biggest joy while teaching is seeing the students’ light bulb moment."

THE JOY OF THE JOURNEY

Kathy's philosophy encourages students to develop a "mental appliqué toolbox" to choose the right technique for their unique projects. Her greatest joy as a teacher comes from seeing those "light bulb moments" when students grasp new concepts and realize their creative potential.

A JOURNEY OF SHARING AND LEARNING

One special moment in Kathy's teaching journey was when she assisted Baltimore Album quilting expert Elly Sienkiewicz with a project. After impressing Elly with her skills, Kathy went on to teach alongside her at the renowned Appliqué Academy for several years. This taught Kathy the value of sharing knowledge among students and inspired her to continue helping her students grow and excel.
