Quilters know the right tools can make all the difference! From trusty rulers to favorite rotary cutters, every notion has its place in your creative journey. We asked quilters to share their favorites; here's what they had to say!
Quilter's Favorite Tool
Hands down, not even a close second, Rotary Cutters were reported by nearly 70% of quilters surveyed as their most essential and beloved tool.
Rounding out the list were these popular items:
- Rulers
- Seam Ripper
- Scissors
- Thread Snips
Rulers Rule!
When asked how many rulers quilters have in their collection nearly 3/4 of the quilters responded that they had anywhere from 6 to 20 rulers on hand.
While specialized rulers were reported as helpful, most quilters reported use a mix of standard rulers and specialty rulers.
One quilter went the extra mile and counted her entire ruler collection which came to 135!
Extra Aids
The creativity of quilters never fails to impress! When asked about non-quilting tools used as an essential part of the quilt making process the responses were as diverse as the quilters!

Cat - This essential part of the quilting process was the most popular non-quilting tool shared.
Dark Chocolate Espresso Beans - While snacks were mentioned as a popular choice, this particular snack has found its way onto the Must Have list for many quilters while making their creations!
Judge Judy - Who knew this courtroom diva has quilters around the world pushing their pedal to the metal for an afternoon of piecing.
Dog Treats - Whether used as a distraction or reward, this handy tool keeps your fury friends happy leaving you free to manage precision points and the other tasks that required focused attention.
Comfy Chair - With hours of uninterrupted quilting on the schedule, a comfy chair is a must!
Quilting Friends - From tips and tricks to show and tell, quilting friends were often listed as the can't-live-without tool for successful quilting!
