The Harvest Owl

Decorate your home for fall with this charming wool applique owl. He's perfect for a pillow, table runner, or wallhanging.
Gather your supplies:
Wool scraps in the following colors
- Cream background
- 3 Fall colors for leaves
- Brown for limb
- Beige for owl body
- Dark accent for wings and horns
- Dark brown for beak
- Yellow, green, gold, and black for eyes
Cutting Instructions:
Cut the background fabric to the desired size. The minimum for the pattern is 8" x 10" without seam allowances.
Applique -
- Trace the pattern pieces onto freezer paper. Be sure to add the parts that overlap.
- Cut the pieces out leaving a border around all cutting lines.
- Press the freezer paper to the front side of the wool scraps.
- Cut out the owl pieces on the tracing line.
Let's put this owl together:
Step 1 - Branch
- Using the diagram as a guide, place the branch on the background fabric.
- Baste or glue in place.
- Stitch in place with matching embroidery floss. Use your favorite embroidery stitch such as blanket or whip stitches.
Step 2 - Leaves
- Using the diagram as a guide, place the leaves on the background fabric overlapping the branch.
- Baste or glue in place.
- Stitch in place with matching embroidery floss. Add veins to the leaves with darker floss if desired.
Step 3 - Owl Body
- Using the diagram as a guide, place the owl body on the background fabric overlapping the branch.
- Baste or glue in place.
- Stitch in place with matching embroidery floss.
Step 4 - Owl Wings
- Using the diagram as a guide, place the wings on the owl body.
- Baste or glue in place.
- Stitch in place with matching embroidery floss.
Step 5 - Owl Eyes
- Using the diagram as a guide, place the yellow outer circle for the eyes.
- Baste or glue in place.
- Stitch in place with matching embroidery floss.
- Using the diagram as a guide, place the green circle for the eyes.
- Baste or glue in place.
- Stitch in place with matching embroidery floss.
- Using the diagram as a guide, place the gold circle for the eyes.
- Baste or glue in place.
- Stitch in place with matching embroidery floss.
- Using the diagram as a guide, place the black centers for the eyes.
- Baste or glue in place.
- Stitch in place with matching embroidery floss.
Step 4 - Owl Beak
- Using the diagram as a guide, place the owl's beak.
- Baste or glue in place.
- Stitch in place with matching embroidery floss.
Step 4 - Owl Horns
- Using the diagram as a guide, place the owl's horns.
- Baste or glue in place.
- Stitch in place with matching embroidery floss.
Once finished with all the stitching, lay the piece face down on a towel and cover with another towel. Press quickly from the backside.
Trim the piece to the desired size for the finishing project.
