The Historic Masonic Theatre, Clifton Forge, VA, is honored to open the third floor WestRock Room to showcase a unique quilt and artwork exhibit, “Women in History, Art & Antique Quilts". The “Women in History” exhibit by Kaye England includes 22 quilts that honor the following women who left their mark in many different ways on our universe.
Martha Washington, Helen Taft, Betsy Ross, Dolley Madison, Harriet Tubman, Frances Cleveland, Lucille Ball, Amelia Earhart, Carry Nation, Sarah Breedlove “Madam C. J. ” Walker, Priscilla Alden, Abigail Adams, Eleanor Roosevelt, Grace Coolidge, Harriet Beecher Stowe, Julia Ward Howe, Susan B. Anthony, Sojourner Truth, Louisa May Alcott, and Helen Keller.
Whether the woman was a wife of a president who also impacted legislation, or an avid abolitionist, a world renown comedian who ran her own business, or a blind and deaf woman who accomplished more than anyone thought possible, these women should be honored and remembered.
In addition to some of the quilts, 15 pieces of art accompany the stitched pieces and also tells a story. For example, with the Helen Keller quilt is an original framed letter that Helen typed on her braille typewriter.
Twenty antique hand-pieced and hand-quilted quilts made in the 1800's join the Women in History quilts in the beautiful setting of the third floor WestRock room of the Historic Masonic Theatre.
This exhibit is not to be missed and will be open during Theatre hours through March 1. On Saturday, March 9, from noon to 4:00 pm ET, all the quilts and art will be auctioned in a live and online auction with all proceeds going to The Historic Masonic Theatre.
