Cherrywood Challenge: Poppy - Bud

This year's challenge invited quilters from around the world to capture the beauty and poignant symbolism of the poppy flower. The poppy, a vibrant red bloom, holds a special place in history as a symbol of remembrance for those who served and sacrificed during World War I. Soldiers on the Western Front often encountered fields of poppies, and the flower became a poignant reminder of the war's impact.

The challenge encouraged quilters to interpret the poppy's symbolism using a limited palette of eight Cherrywood's hand-dyed fabrics. Explore a world of color and texture as you wander through the exhibit, marveling at the diverse techniques and embellishments employed by the quiltmakers. From traditional piecing to modern applique, each quilt offers a unique perspective on the poppy's enduring symbolism.

SAQA Global Exhibition: Color in Context: RED

This captivating exhibition presents a global exploration of the color red through the unique lens of art quilts. Studio Art Quilt Associates, Inc. (SAQA), a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting the art quilt, challenged artists worldwide to create layered and stitched works that delve into their personal interpretations of red.

From ancient cave paintings to modern masterpieces, red has consistently held profound significance across cultures. This exhibition invites viewers to contemplate the multifaceted nature of this vibrant hue. Red can evoke a spectrum of emotions – excitement, danger, anger, and love – in Western cultures while symbolizing purity in India and luck in China. As a primary color, red also serves as the foundation for a myriad of other hues.

This exhibition showcases the diverse and innovative ways in which artists translate their personal experiences and cultural interpretations of red into stunning and thought-provoking art quilts.
