Women in the U.S. couldn’t vote until the passage of the 19th Amendment in 1920. Before that, women often expressed moral, religious, and political opinions in their quilts. Ann will discuss some of the opinions expressed on such issues as Temperance, Abolition, Suffrage, Health, and Military Actions. We still express ourselves through our quilts, supporting various community service projects. Ann is a member of the Quilts of Valor organization and co-author of two of their books. In this lecture, youth quilter and owner of Pigs in a Blanket Quilting, Lorelai Kuecker, shares her inspiring journey into the quilting world. At just 15, Lorelai has been quilting for three years, earning awards at the 2023 Kansas City Regional Quilt Festival, the 2023 and 2024 Missouri State Fair, and 2024 AQS QuiltWeek Contest in Branson, Missouri. Her latest quilt was featured in the the 2024 Houston International Quilt Festival’s “50 Years of Great Quilts” special exhibit. Lorelai has collaborated with Ruby Star Society and Northcott Fabrics. Her work was also highlighted in the June 2023 issue of Fons & Porter’s Quick + Easy Quilts.
Join Lorelai for an inspiring hour as she shares how she began quilting, the struggles she has faced building her skills, the lessons she’s learned, and her exciting future plans. The presentation concludes with a trunk show featuring her projects, including her custom couture quilted clothing and bags.
