Paducah – Jefferson Room
Kinman, MJ
Beginner
$70

Color plays a pivotal role in MJ Kinman’s gem quilts. Over the past 25+ years she’s learned ways to approach color confidence and is delighted to share these ideas with you. This is a hands-on workshop, full of experimentation, to help you gain color confidence. Begin the day getting to know the color wheel. Learn how our brains crave harmony and why certain color combinations satisfy that craving. Move beyond basic color theory to exploring how a color can change simply by being placed to other colors. Using strips and squares of solid fabric, you’ll learn how to create sparkle with value contrast and how to make quilts glow with saturation contrast. MJ will also show you how to create effective transparencies and how to achieve the illusion of fabric sliding over and under one another. Finally, she’ll show you how to change the appearance of a color just by changing its neighboring hue. For those who want to sew during the workshop, we’ll take time to assemble strips into blocks of concentric squares, similar to the design used by Josef Albers in his series Homage to the Square. Why are these concepts important? MJ wants to help you demystify the use of color, gain the confidence in your color selection, and create brilliant quilts, regardless of your inspiration.

Students will have the opportunity to sew their experiments together to capture the various effects they’ve been studying.

Fusing & Quilting Back to Front, #353103f

Paducah – Truman Room
Michaud, Kestrel
Intermediate
$178

Students will create a fused appliqué quilt and learn how to quilt it using Kestrel's unique technique. The conventional method of quilting is to start in the center of a quilt and stitch outward to avoid wrinkles and distortion caused by the application of thread. However, this method does not work for Kestrel's highly detailed, imaginative realism designs. As a result, she had to develop an alternative technique. In the first half of the workshop, students will fuse together a Kestrel Michaud original design of fused appliqué fabric to make a quilt. In the second half of class, students will learn Kestrel's method of quilting and use that process to free-motion quilt their projects. Note: This workshop is not intended to be an introduction to free-motion quilting. Students should already be comfortable quilting via free-motion. Registration for this workshop includes complimentary show admission for Friday.

Michaud, Kestrel
All Levels
$125

This full-day workshop focuses on teaching students how to think creatively, demonstrates the importance of design elements, and teaches the first rule of Kestrel’s personal design formula. Kestrel will guide students through a series of hands-on exercises:

  • Lesson 1: Idea Generation - Students will go through series of exercises that will help students think of subjects and settings from nothing.
  • Lesson 2: Learn to Draw Like an Artist - Pulling from her own formal training, Kestrel will guide students through a series of drawing exercises to develop drawing ability. (Note from Kestrel: I've encountered a recurring sentiment that some art quilters don't consider themselves to be artists because they can't draw. Although I don't agree with that opinion, I understand why someone might feel that way. This series of exercises will work for anyone who wants to learn to draw.)
  • Lesson 3: Color Combinations - Students will learn about color harmonies and practice applying that knowledge to a design. Kestrel will share examples of color arrangements as they appear in her own art.
  • Lesson 4: Highlight, Midtone, and Shadow - Students will learn the first rule of Kestrel's personal quilt design formula and practice implementing that rule on a simple subject first. Kestrel will share how this formula applies to all of her own work. Students will begin work on applying the formula to a design of their choice (students may bring a pre-printed photograph of their choosing or use one provided by Kestrel. Photo subjects should be simple: A pet, a flower, a single object, etc.)
  • Lesson 5: Picking Fabric - Students will participate in an exercise in choosing fabric based on Kestrel's design formula. This final lesson is intended to prepare students to turn their design (from Lesson 4) into a finished quilt at home.
