Curated by Kristin Goedert & Lilo Bowman, TheQuiltShow.com
Over the past 17 years, TheQuiltShow.com (TQS), the world’s first full-service interactive online video/web TV show created just for quilters, has offered a place to learn from world-class teachers, to be inspired by stunning quilts, and to connect with other quilters in a fun and positive community environment.
As any quilter knows, a beautiful and well-executed quilt requires a wide range of skills and abilities, many of which are often hidden or behind the seams. It was with this idea in mind that TQS chose to narrow our focus to techniques that wow or intrigue and are not necessarily evident upon first glance. At the same time, TQS also wanted to create an engaging and interactive collection that would support the quilting community and share knowledge to help quilters grow their skills.
Every quilt in this collection represents the work of a TQS featured artist's unique or interesting technique that provides you the viewer a glimpse into their process.
Cherrywood Challenge: The Monarch – Chrysalis
The iconic Monarch butterfly is in trouble. In the summer of 2022, it was put on the Endangered List. Let's change that. Not only can you plant the seeds of milkweed, you can plant the seeds of creativity. Can you do it with just eight colors as you make a Monarch quilt?
Quilters were encouraged to push themselves creatively and to think outside the box.
Eight colors of Cherrywood Hand-dyed Fabrics were used to create a 20-inch square quilted artwork. No other colors of fabric could be added. The only way to add more colors was with thread, stringy bits, paint, pencil, ink, beads, etc.
Quilts from Ukraine: Natalia & Illia Lashko and the Ukrainian Quilters Association
Despite blackouts, regular shelling, and lack of heating and electricity, Ukrainian quilters have completed many quilts.
The Ukrainian Quilters Associatioon members made quilts honoring Oleksandra Exter, a famous Ukrainian painter avant-garde, and other quilts representing their country.
Natalia Lashko and her son, Illia Lashko, made quilts that feature the unique technique of straw embroidery, which Natalia and her husband, Volodymyr, developed in the early 1980s.
All living creatures need a safe place to heal, regroup, rest, or retreat. Do you nurture your loved ones in a special place? Do you create a haven for others in need? What is your haven?
