Willingham, Margaret
Margaret sees quilts as transcriptions of the world around us – in her work, she is inspired by the functional elegance of Victorian architecture, from iron grates to grand facades, as well as the natural beauty of creation. In her designs, she want to enable you to bring this beauty and elegance to your own home to create a sense of welcome and hospitality for the people you love. Margaret Brewster Willingham, the creative mind at work behind Eye of the Beholder Quilt Designs, is a national teacher and lecturer, pattern designer, and author. Margaret’s quilts are influenced by the dynamic elements of movement, color, and design that she has used for over 40 years as a choreographer of dance. She is most well-known for the innovative (and foolproof!) methods she’s devised for reverse applique – Trace, Baste, Snip and Stitch, which takes the mystery (and hardship) out of reverse applique. In addition to her own pattern designs, she designs patterns for commercial and Indie fabric companies, and co-authored her first book in 2018: Christmas RAPPing, Christmas Quilts featuring Reverse Appliqué & Paper-Piecing (with Nan Baker). She teaches regularly at specialist applique retreats and also at festivals.

“To live a creative life, we must lose our fear of being wrong.” –Joseph Chilton Pearce. Life and quilting have much in common. We are shaped by our pasts, but not limited by them. When we find a creative expression, like quilting, we have the opportunity to take what we have and create something of beauty out of it. Both life and creativity are journeys that require faith, hope, and trust in the process. Get a glimpse into the quilting life of the founder and creative force behind Eye of the Beholder Quilt Designs. Come hear about Margaret’s creative journey as seen through her quilts.

Use your creativity while learning to make the Spring Mola mug rug with the Eye of the Beholder’s easy four-step method. Molas, made famous by the Kuna people, are multi-layered reverse appliqué pieces that are created by cutting down through the layers and hand stitching them to the layer below. Everyone begins with the same pattern, but the variations grow endless as creativity takes over. Learn how to create your own design motifs and think through your design to create your own added design motifs. The Mug Rug Mola project will use 3 layers of contrasting fabric: a top, middle, and background layer, with accents of a fourth fabric for appliqué. Though the stitching is done by hand, you will learn how to baste both by hand and machine for speed.
