Each year, the National Quilt Museum sponsors an annual contest and exhibit—New Quilts from an Old Favorite. The contest challenges today’s quiltmakers to interpret a single traditional quilt block in a new and exciting work of their own design.
In this book, you’ll find a brief description of the 2013 contest, followed by the five award winners and fifteen additional finalists and their quilts.
Full-color photographs of the quilts accompany each quiltmaker’s comments providing insight into their creative processes.
The winners’ and finalists’ tips and techniques offer an artistic framework for your own interpretation.
About the Contest
The contest requires that quilts entered be recognizable in some way as a variation on that year’s selected traditional block. The quilts must be no larger than 80" and no smaller than 50" on a side. Each quilt entered must be quilted. Quilts may only be entered by the maker(s) and must have been completed after December 31 two years prior to the entry date.
