Class 4 – Foundation Paper Piecing

Want those points to be absolutely accurate? Foundation paper piecing (FPP) can help you do that. What exactly is FPP and why would you want to use it? Foundation paper piecing is a piecing method that uses a paper (or cloth) foundation that all of the pieces are stitched to following the number sequence printed on the paper. Anytime you want accuracy in piecing, especially those spiky designs that need to have very sharp points, is a great time to use FPP. Bonnie will share tips for marking the paper foundation, how to align the fabrics, and even how to “fix” it when you cut your fabric too short, all while making a pillow using a FPP design and a tote bag with an outer pocket using FPP blocks.

Lesson 1:

Learn to Foundation Paper Piece

Make a 16” pillow using foundation paper piecing. Foundation paper piecing is easy to sew and it is a piecing method that is very accurate. Bonnie will share her tips and tricks for foundation paper piecing the four blocks used to make this pillow. Sew on the straight lines and violå – you have accurate spikey points.

Lesson 2:

Assemble the Pillow

Sew the four blocks together using the layout of your choice. Then measure for the borders and add them to the blocks. Learn how to taper the corners for that decorator look and you’ll have no protruding corners. Making new pillows or new covers for old pillows can update your décor in an afternoon!

Lesson 3:

Foundation Paper Piecing the Twisted Log Cabin Blocks

Make a tote bag in eight easy steps with an outside pieced pocket and an inside pocket divided into three sections. Here is a chance to use some bright fabrics to make an eye-catching tote bag. Use a Jelly Roll and you won’t even need to cut the strips. We will start by making the two Twisted Log Cabin blocks for the pocket.

Lesson 4:

Assemble the Tote Bag

Now we are ready to make the handles, sew the outside pocket to the outer bag, create the bag bottom, sew the inside pocket to the lining, assemble the bag, and finally sew the bag together. The FPP pocket is an eye-catching detail that everyone will notice on your new tote bag!
