Create an abstract quilt that has amazing movement and drama. Go from inspiration to a simple sketch, then have fun coloring your sketch with bits of fabric to create a mock-up of your design – see before you sew! The design is gridded and the blocks are foundation pieced using an easy sew and flip method with room for creativity and improvisation. Lots of discussion of design principles and how to use color and value to create the drama and desired effects.

Join Julia and learn to free-motion quilt on a domestic sewing machine in a fun, supportive, and encouraging environment. This workshop is great for beginners or those that need a refresher on the basics. Techniques you will learn include setting up the machine, preparing the quilt, the how-to of the quilting, lots of designs and practice, how to deal with a large quilt, and how to overcome common problems.

While you will be working on home machines in class, this workshop is also appropriate for longarm machine quilters.

Create this easy and quick to sew strippy Log Cabin quilt using simple value transitions to create the illusion of glowing. Learn about color and value as you design your strip sets. Sew the strips sets, cut into squares, pair up, sew diagonally, and voila – half square triangles that give the illusion of Log Cabin blocks. Arrange in any Log Cabin or half square triangle arrangement. Cut strips or use your scrap strings as they are for minimal prep. A huge stash or scrap buster! Includes multiple layout options.

We will cover sorting and storing scraps, how to combine them into a lovely color palette, and how to use them to make quilts with more richness and depth than can be achieved with just a few fabrics. This lecture will have you digging out those scraps and putting them to good use! Supplies are not required for a lecture, although you may want to bring a pen and paper to take notes.
