Curved Piecing: Going in Circles, #16S7515
Join Marge Tucker to learn her unique curved piecing technique to create circles. The Going in Circles technique results in amazing abstract circles which can be pieced/trimmed into blocks, appliqued, or cut apart and reformed. These circle blocks work well with other improvisational techniques or abstract blocks. Off-cuts from creating the circles provide even more inspirational opportunities. While this technique is advanced, anyone with a sense of adventure can do it! Students will learn free-form cutting and curved piecing techniques.
Improv Dresden Plate, #16F7102f
Learn how to piece improvisational Dresden Plate blocks! In this technique workshop, you will learn how to piece the substrate so the wedges are varied in length, different ways to cut the wedges, and how to piece the wedges together into circles. Marge will also go over layouts and how to work with the circle blocks. Learn the technique, make three to four blocks, and learn the options for combining the blocks. This is an incredibly versatile and innovative technique with many exciting options to explore. Registration for this workshop includes complimentary show admission for Friday.
Improv in Antique Quilts, #16WLE00
Some of our quilting ancestors were ahead of their time! We are not the first generation of quilters to discover improvisational quilting, but we may be the ones who have embraced it and made it mainstream. In this trunk show, Marge displays antique and vintage quilts that are improvisationally constructed. So much inspiration and some great lessons can be learned from these graphic and abstract antiques. Supplies are not required for a lecture, although you may want to bring a pen and paper to take notes.
Learn Curves - Eel Grass and Eddies, #16T7505
Eel Grass and Eddies is a great workshop to "get your feet wet" with improvisational curved cutting and piecing. Two fabric rectangles yield two reverse image blocks that can be used as is or cut into smaller units. In this half-day workshop, you will make several of the reverse image units. This is a technique class on curves and is fast and fun! Detailed instructions in the handout will help you finish the quilt at home.
Modern Log Cabin, #16T7506
Make a traditional quilt block, the Log Cabin, in a non-traditional way. Use free-form cutting to control the look and design of the quilt blocks. Decisions on the next color and strip size/shape are made as the block is built. No need to have a plan, in fact, you will be more creative without one! Just pick a strip and sew! Marge covers free-form cutting, liberated sewing or sew-as-you-go, as well as design and composition.
Scrap Bash: Diamond Romance, #16W7503
Fall in love with diamonds! Let’s use up all those leftover strips and strings from previous projects and turn them into a fantastic quilt! Improvisationally pieced rectangles make light and dark diamonds when placed together. This results in a visually graphic layout with very little cutting and prep so you can get right to the fun. In this half-day workshop, you’ll learn the technique for string piecing rectangles while making (4-8) blocks. This could be your new favorite scrap quilt!
