Class 6 – Six Panel Quilts in Six Weeks

In this class, we will be working with six different panels – a different panel each week. Gather a variety of border ideas that you can use on the panels of your choice.

Lesson 1:

Half-Square Triangle Border

Lesson 1 features a 4” half-square triangle border to frame the panel and a plain border to make the central design float.

Lesson 2:

Borders with Cornerstones

Lesson 2 features the Venice Flowers panel by Robert Kaufman. Four borders are added to the panel for a wallhanging. Cornerstones on three borders leads your eye from the edge to the central design in the panel.

Lesson 3:

Blocks in the Left and Bottom Borders

Lesson 3 features the Wildflower Farm panel by David Textiles. Learn how to add pieced blocks to make your quilt larger, how to add borders to make the blocks fit, and how to change the size of the outer borders for a better balance.

Lesson 4:

Three Borders with Mitered Corners

Lesson 4 features the Ironweed in the Fog panel by Starforest Quilts. Three mitered borders are added to this digitally-printed photo panel. The colors in the panel are repeated in Border 2 by using an ombre fabric that is colored from light gray to purple. Borders 1 and 2 use the same purple print. Learn how to calculate the size to cut the borders for mitered corners, sew them together, and then stitch the three borders to the panel. See how Bonnie marks the miters using the sewn seam line rather than the outer edge of the last border.

Lesson 5:

Using a Border Print as a Border

Lesson 5 features the Tuscan Poppies panel by Timeless Treasures. Three borders are added to this panel including a companion border print. Learn how to slice the panel using the Fibonacci Sequence to size the slices and how to scale Border 1 so the repeat of the Border 2 border print fits perfectly.

Lesson 6:

Borders with Four-patch Blocks

Lesson 6 features the Quilting Santa panel from Marshall Dry Goods. Three borders are added to this panel. Learn how to size Border 1 so the pieced blocks in Border 2 fit the panel. See how Bonnie chain pieces the Four-Patch blocks without using any pins. This is a skill you can use over and over again.
