Cherrywood Challenge: Poppy - Bud, Petal & Seed
This year's challenge invited quilters from around the world to capture the beauty and poignant symbolism of the poppy flower. The poppy, a vibrant red bloom, holds a special place in history as a symbol of remembrance for those who served and sacrificed during World War I. Soldiers on the Western Front often encountered fields of poppies, and the flower became a poignant reminder of the war's impact.
The challenge encouraged quilters to interpret the poppy's symbolism using a limited palette of eight Cherrywood's hand-dyed fabrics. Explore a world of color and texture as you wander through the exhibit, marveling at the diverse techniques and embellishments employed by the quiltmakers. From traditional piecing to modern applique, each quilt offers a unique perspective on the poppy's enduring symbolism.
Girl Scout Troop 8912’s Handprint Quilt - Metropolis, Illinois
A Patchwork of Friendship: The Girl Scouts of Troop 8912 created this special quilt to remember their time together. They traced their hands and appliquéd them to a fabric that represented them. They also made strip-pieced blocks to match their hand appliqués. Notice how each block is unique and reflects the individual style of each Girl Scout. This quilt is a wonderful example of teamwork and creativity!
ARE WE THERE YET? by Rita Koerber, Rudee Ann Rodriguez, Noelle Gohmann, Alice Ann Pearce, quilted by Carmella Broadus
Hersday’s Roundabout Roulette Quilt Exhibit – Indiana
Imagine the thrill of entrusting your creative vision to fellow quilters! The Hersday Quilters participated in a Round Robin exchange, each crafting a unique center block. These blocks traveled through the group, with each of the four quilters adding a 'round' of piecing, building outward, and responding to the previous additions, all without revealing their work to one another. This exhibit showcases the beautiful culmination of a year's worth of hidden artistry, revealed in these stunning collaborative quilts.
